IMG_0036To the north of the mid-Funen village of Espe lies Espe Folke- og Tumlepark, a wonderful recreational area established fully on private initiative in an old gravel pit. Childcarers come here for a walk with their charges, the locals gather here to celebrate the Feast of St. John, and sheep are doing their bit to keep the vegetation down, so the area gradually turns into an exciting pasture.

The shelter is n the middle of Espe Folke- og Tumlepark, which was inaugurated on St. John’s Eve in 2004. The place is privately owned but its owners created the park in the old closed-down gravel pit, which was not suitable for farming, explaining that: “The idea with the park was to create a peaceful spot where children and adults can enjoy nature. This should help make Espe a more attractive place, especially for families with children.

Nowadays, Espe Folke- og Tumlepark is a lovely green oasis for animals and people, which besides a shelter also houses a campfire place (put in place in April 2012) as well as a fire place with many sets, each consisting of one table and benches.

The park is about 500 metres away from the cycling, hiking and bridle path between Koring and Ringe, which in Korinth has a connection via Sollerup to the Archipelago Trail. A small path connects this shelter with the Korinth-Ringe line.

If you are riding a horse, you can stay in this shelter while your horse rests in the small on-site pen.

The place is situated a bit up from the Danish Nature Agency’s forest Espe Skov.
