Spot the wild horses and soaring eagles
The shelter site is located in the middle of one of Lolland’s most beautiful nature areas, Saksfjed-Hyllekrog. The area offers many opportunities for exciting adventures in nature, particularly if you enjoy hiking. You can witness the majestic white-tailed sea eagles, which are known to breed in the area, and the cranes resting in the fields. There is a nice 2-story bird observation tower just a short distance from the site, where you can get an excellent overview of the area; enjoy the view of the Hyllekrog spit the wind mill park, the wild horses and the many fascinating birds that come to the area each year.

Experience the different seasons
During different parts of the year, you can experience vastly different nature events. In the months March and April, you’ll see the eider birds’ fascinating migration. During the early summer months, you’ll discover rare flowers and plants blooming on the dyke. In the middle of the summer, you’ll find rare butterflies, and during the autumn months you’ll witness the beginning of Denmark’s largest bird migration. The best spot to view the migration is on the dyke and sand dunes at Brunddragene. On the busy days, you’ll see tens of thousands birds passing by. Outside the birds’ breeding period (which is 1st March to 16th July), you can hike along the Hyllekrog spit and enjoy the view from the lighthouse.

Dive into history
Just 7 km from Lyttesholm you’ll find Museum Polakkasernen, where you can learn about the east European seasonal sugar beet workers who came to Denmark during the early industrial times. The workers were brought here by the nearby estate, Lungholm Gods, where you can host parties or feel like the king of the world in while sleeping in the luxurious castle.
