In Merritskov forest at Knuthenborg you can experience wild European bisons and boars. The animals moved into the forest in 2017, so they are used to people walking or bicycling past on the paths. The European bisons are rare, and almost went extinct during the 1st World War, but thanks to solid efforts there now is about 4000 bisons across Europe. The boars and bisons in the forest help with taking care of the local flora, and increase the diversity by treating the forest differently than the regular Danish animals. Read more about the European bison here. There is no entrance fee; it is entirely free to bicycle or walk in the forest. Don’t forget to bring your camera!
We recommend the adventure route Bicycle Safari which goes from Maribo through Merritskov and Knuthenborg to Bandholm. You can find it in the Mid Lolland category in the app.
Experience the rich bird life at Gedser, the Maribo Lakes, Saksfjed-Hyllekrog or Nakskov Fjord. The four areas each offer a different experience, but all of them have rare bird species that are otherwise rare in the rest of Denmark. At the Maribo Lakes it is almost guaranteed that you’ll be able to spot some of the majestic white-tailed sea eagles. There are several bird watching towers around the 4 lakes, and each of them have a nice overview of the species you’re likely to encounter there, so even the inexperienced birdwatchers have a chance of identifying the birds. Gedser Odde is the ideal location to observe migratory birds, read more on the bird observatory’s website.
