Bursø Hestehave
This nice little shelter site is located 250 meters away from the Maribo Naturskole. Vegetation on the western side protects the shelter site from the strong western winds, and the scenic views towards the front are amazing. The nearest lake is Søndersø, with the island Hestø being closest to the shore. Hestø is owned by the local government and accessible to the public. If you pay close attention, then there’s a good chance of viewing the majestic sea eagles soaring above the lake. You’re welcome to walk along the blooming meadows, and you can catch your own dinner from the docks at Naturskolen. Drinking water and toilet facilities are also available there. If you arrive on horseback, then there’s a grazing paddock with water available directly by the shelter site.

The area around Naturskolen is a small oasis near Søndersø with public access. There is plenty of beautiful nature, and yet you’re only a few kilometers away from civilisation and Maribo. It is only a 2 km walk along the nature trail to get to the Maribo Open-Air Museum. If you continue east, then you’ll get to the Søholt Estate, where you can walk in the woods and visit their charming baroque garden, and further east you’ll find the lakes Hejrede and Røgbølle, so you can explore nearly all of the nature park during your stay at the shelters. Alternatively, you can follow the old railway path (Jernbanestien) down to Rødbyhavn, where you can take the ferry over to Germany or visit Lalandia.

If you arrive in May or June, then you can enjoy the singing of the nightingales. The birds are small and plain-looking, but their singing voices are beautiful, and they can be heard for most of the night, and occasionally during the day too. Angling is permitted in Søndersø, and the lake is infamous for its huge pikes. Aside from that, the area is also suited for gathering herbs; you can download the Vild Mad app for inspiration and gathering routes (fully available in English!).
