Sugar baiting moths

When you visit the shelter “Gyveltorp” you’ll have the opportunity to try sugar baiting moths.

You’ll find all the equipment needed for this activity in the box sitting on the outside of the shelter. Moths, also known as Jewels of the Night, often surprise with their beautiful colors and markings, and they are indeed a far cry from what most people see as annoying bugs gathering around lamps at night.

Moths are attracted by light and by odours and in the box you’ll find ropes soaked in a lovely (to moths, that is) concoction of red wine, sugar and other choice ingredients. Hang up the ropes and later go for a walk, bringing your torch with you, and a whole new world of magnificent shapes and colours will open up for you.

In the box you’ll also find a folder containing instructions, information on which days are best for sugar baiting, and a short overview of the various groups of butterflies.

Do bring your camera when checking the ropes and if you take some good shots, we’ll be happy to see them so that we can all learn more about what’s flying around in the woods around Trente Mølle.
