More than anything else, this area is a gem if you are fond of butterflies or other insects that prefer open grassland. 14 butterfly species have been seen flying in the area around the shelter. The relatively recently arrived wasp spider spins its web in tall grass where it sits waiting for a grasshopper to get itself trapped in the web. There are in fact quite a lot of grasshoppers, if you visit at the right time of the year.
The beautiful common blue is found in large numbers in the area.
Ravens nest in the area and nests of the rare hazel dormouse can also be found in the vicinity. In autumn, there is a good chance of picking edible mushrooms. The woods are full of raspberries and blackberries and in winter you can see dippers by the millstream. You can fish in one of Trente Mill’s ponds and maybe catch a perch to eat or a roach, if you have the patience to remove lots of bones.
Wasp spiders and Small Heath are frequently seen in the area.
